Who knew? 2014 color of the year

The much anticipated color of the year announcement from Pantone has been released and I am certain it has caught many designers by surprise!  Wait for it…………………..

Everyone has been expecting to see a vivid cobalt blue so this soft and somewhat feminine color is a surprise.  I am not sure how I feel about it as purple is not my favorite color anyway.  I have a feeling it will spend it’s yearlong reign as an oft forgotten choice much like 2011’s Honeysuckle Pink.

For purple lovers, however, I can hear the screams of delight.  They can pair this shade of their favorite color with neutrals like beige and taupe, of course, or add a hint of sophistication to gray or black.  Pantone is recommending pairing it up with olive green (might be pretty if you can convince your husband) or even shades of gold.  And I must admit I can envision it in a ladies dressing room with plenty of brass hardware as a backdrop.

So what are your thoughts?  Yay or nay on using this color in any space that doesn’t include a wall poster of One Direction or Justin Bieber?
