Ask the designer: where do I find decorating inspiration?

The question is “Where do I find decorating inspiration?”  This is actually an easy question to answer—just open your eyes and take a look around.  Now that might sound a bit snotty but it is true.  Designers come up with ideas, color schemes and patterns by really seeing the colors in a garden, for example, or the way the sunlight alters the look of a window display or even the patterns found on animal skins.  And, of course, while stealing is such an ugly word, we are not above emulating (a much nicer word) a beautiful room we might visit in a hotel, model home or spot in a magazine.

Here are a couple of examples of how the most unlikely or unrelated item can inspire the decor of a room.

The colors found in this collection of jewels would create a luxurious look transformed into a grouping of throw pillows in a city chic apartment, for example, and the gold settings let you see how beautiful brass lamps and accessories would allow the colors to pop.

Are you a lover of the color purple?  Do you often wonder what color to pair it with?  Here’s one answer

Soft yellow, mellow gray and vibrant green mixed with other shades of purple could result in a beautiful color combination as you can see in the photo below.  What you don’t see is the dark purple band in the lampshade and the purples found in the artwork.

A beautiful room always inspires me and this cozy family room from HGTV is no exception. Love, love the color scheme of gray, rust and orange with unique touches like the log filled coffee table, industrial style bookcase with a small TV (hate those huge ones, sorry) and the surprise addition of a happy floral print on the pillows that could easily be switched out for different seasons.

And last but not least, design books.  I cannot get my fill of the beautifully photographed rooms and look at every little detail in every single photo.  My newest favorite, “Love where you live…”.  Love the ladder leaning up against the wall and holding colorful quilts.  This is an idea that could be used in any home, regardless of design style.
